Introduction:
Welcome to "The Power of Positive Thinking: Building Resilience Through Self-Talk" activity. How we talk to ourselves can have a powerful impact on our thoughts, feelings, and actions. Negative self-talk can be damaging and lead to a lack of self-esteem, limiting beliefs, and difficulties in facing challenges. In contrast, positive self-talk can help us build resilience, develop a growth mindset, and cope better with challenges.
This activity will take you through the process of identifying your negative self-talk patterns, replacing them with positive self-talk, and building resilience.
Activity Steps:
Step 1 - Identifying Negative Self-Talk Patterns (10 minutes) Watch this TedTalk by Dr. Guy Winch and take note of the negative self-talk patterns he mentions. Then, reflect on your own negative self-talk patterns and write them down on a piece of paper.
Step 2 - Replacing Negative Self-Talk with Positive Self-Talk (15 minutes) Read this article by Verywell Mind on how to replace negative self-talk with positive self-talk. Choose one of your negative self-talk patterns and replace it with a positive self-talk statement. Write down your positive self-talk statement on the same piece of paper you used in Step 1.
Step 3 - Using Positive Self-Talk in Daily Life (15 minutes)
Read "70+ Positive Affirmations To Use Any Time For Confidence". Choose one activity you engage in regularly (such as exercise, work, or a hobby) and practice using your positive self-talk statement while doing it. Write down your thoughts and feelings about how using positive self-talk affected your experience.
Step 4 - Creating a Positive Self-Talk Plan (5 minutes) Using the positive self-talk statement you created in Step 2 and the strategies you learned in Step 3, create a plan for how you will incorporate positive self-talk into your daily life. Write down your plan on the same piece of paper you used in Step 1.
Reflection Activity:
Take a moment to reflect on your experience completing this activity. Consider how identifying negative self-talk patterns, replacing them with positive self-talk, and creating a plan to incorporate positive self-talk into your daily life can help you build resilience and develop a growth mindset. How will you continue to practice positive self-talk moving forward? Write down your reflections in a journal or notebook.
