Letters Live and the Art of the Letter

When was the last time you wrote a letter? No, not an email; a real pen and paper, fold it, stick it in an envelope, lick and stick a stamp letter! It truly is a lost art and one that our students have had little experience.

Letters Live is a celebration of the letter, brought to life by celebrities who put voice to these historic and sometimes just plain quirky pieces of literary genius.

In the example featured in this post, Jude Law reads a letter from Fred Allen to his insurance agency where he describes the accident for which he felt he was unfairly compensated. The account of his experience and masterful storytelling voice of Jude Law make the listening experience far more than a sum of it’s parts!

Consider some of the ways you might use this resource with your students. How might you relate it to a writing lesson or a storytelling activity? At the very least, you will find the performance entertaining !
