Exploring Math Manipulatives

Objective:



The objective of this professional learning activity is to introduce teachers to various math manipulatives that can be used to enhance their math lessons. By the end of this activity, teachers will be able to identify appropriate manipulatives for different mathematical concepts and integrate them effectively into their lesson plans.


Time for Completion: Approximately 2 hours


Introduction:



Math manipulatives are physical objects that help students to understand abstract mathematical concepts by providing a tangible representation of those concepts. By using math manipulatives, students can visualize mathematical concepts and develop a deeper understanding of them. As a teacher, it is important to have a variety of math manipulatives at your disposal to make your lessons more engaging and effective. In this professional learning activity, we will explore various math manipulatives that can be used to enhance elementary math lessons.


Activity Steps:


Step 1: Watch the following video on the benefits of using math manipulatives in the classroom (8 minutes) https://youtu.be/Ep7D_eTqLAs



Step 2: Explore the National Library of Virtual Manipulatives (NLVM) website and select at least 3 manipulatives that could be used to teach different math concepts (30 minutes) http://nlvm.usu.edu/en/nav/vlibrary.html


Step 3: Watch this video on how to use math manipulatives in the classroom (10 minutes) https://youtu.be/CiEtFSE_UZQ




Step 4: Explore the resource below on Using Virtual Manipulatives to Teach Math. (30 minutes) Make note of any concept that resonates with you. https://powerupwhatworks.org/technology/using-virtual-manipulatives-teach-math


Step 5: Choose one of the manipulatives from Step 2 and create a lesson plan incorporating the manipulative (30 minutes)
